Tools that Help Support Transitional Living

If you are currently in the transitional living stage, then you have probably experienced a low point in your life when your substance of choice, be it alcohol or drugs, failed you. You want to stop abusing that substance but your addiction has become the most important thing in your life and you feel like you cannot stop.

Somehow, you come to your senses and make the decision to stay sober. You realize that no matter how low you have sunk, no matter how many times you have fallen down, you always have the choice to stand up. So you enter into a phase of transitional living, like thousands of recovering substance abusers have before you.

You have to be fully committed to your decision to start the transitional living phase of your recovery if you want to regain your sobriety. Here are some of the important things that will help ensure a successful transitional living program:

Take One Day at a Time

The decision to stay away from alcohol or drugs for good can be quite overwhelming. Leave the past behind, live in the present, and do not worry about the future. Take things slowly because there is no such thing as instant recovery. Make a list of things to do or start a diary.

Stay Away from All Addictive Substances

Your decision to permanently abstain from alcohol or drugs should also include other mind- and emotion-altering substances. Your addiction may be invariably triggered by these other substances like cigarettes.

Take the 12 Steps Seriously

The 12 Steps should be a major part of your transitional living program. Read the literature, attend meetings, and work with your sponsor to get the necessary guidance that will help you make a complete recovery. Make the 12 Steps, the 12 Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous, and other related literature part of your daily reading.

You are Not an Island

You cannot hope to go through the process of transitional living Los Angeles alone. Find a sponsor immediately. A sponsor is another person of the same gender recovering from the same type of addiction who has been sober longer than you have and has more experience with the 12 Steps. If your partnership does not work out, go look for another sponsor. Attend meetings regularly with other recovering addicts.

Do Not Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Get the phone numbers of other recovering addicts who are also in a transitional living program. You may be shy or hesitant at first but there are times when you will need their help. It is good to know that you have people you can talk to.

Explore Your Spirituality

Do you believe in a Higher Power? During recovery, you may experience a new or reignited spiritual feeling. Be open to it. If you do have a religious affiliation, now will be the time to be more faithful to your prayer habits. Try meditating to clear your mind whenever in doubt or when you feel troubled or weary.
